Rebuild Kit Choices
My 4.0L crapped out. Have any of you bought a all in one rebuild kit? Had any bad experiences? I've found a few online for about $500-650 (links below and on Ebay). I'd prefer to just get a kit and redo it than take a chance with a $750-1000 junkyard engine.

Tuesday I ordered a kit from Redline on ebay and actually called them to order it and they said 4 days for delivery and it would ship Wednesday. Well to my surprise it appeared today. Wasn't happy with FEDEX though as they left it on the front porch and it rained but fortunately I was in the shop and heard the truck pull away. All parts were as I ordered them and it was free shipping. Now pulling the block apart so it can get dipped tomorrow.

The thing has had some issues for a few years now... Here's the story:
It belonged to a friend of a friend that smacked the front driver corner during an ice storm. It had low oil pressure for a while before that. He dropped the pan, cleaned out a bunch of sludge and slapped in a new pump. So I buy the thing, rig the front end and drive it for a while. Then after getting off the expressway one day, the oil pressure went to zero and the light came on. So I kept it revved up till I got it home (just enough to build some pressure). Checked the oil and there was no milkshake. So I dumped in a couple bottles of STP to thicken it up. It definitely helped but still gets scary low at a hot idle. Sorry it's not a good story... but I've got a feeling it will be in a few years (unless it can handle me beating on it).
So I just want to do a refresh if the crank survived. It's not knocking so I might get lucky. I'm not willing to put much more than $700 into the thing, otherwise I'll let it sit behind the garage until I save up for a 4.8 or 5.3.

Sweet. That was one of the kits I was looking at. Good to know they have fast shipping. Keep us posted on how the parts work out.

Here's a 4.8 that puts out comparable HP & TQ to a stroker for 1/2 the price. Really tempting if the 4.0 crank is shot. I've gotta tear it apart to see what to do.

I am selling the motor and trans out of my truck. its a 4.8 motor and a 4l60e trans with rebuilt trans, I just re-did the whole top end, gaskets, re-did heads because of manifold leak. Motor runs awsome and trans also works. I have a brand new motor and trans i am installing, am redoing the truck from the ground up. $750 obo

More bad news today with the 4.0L.
I thought I would change the oil before driving it to work to do the rebuild... a video of what came out of the pan would have been great but this wasn't expected. I pulled the plug and after about 3 seconds (count it in your head, that's about how long it takes to cover the bottom of the drain pan in oil) "oil" finally came out of the plug hole. It was almost like cold chocolate syrup was pouring out. It didn't even pour, it curled out in chunks. It finally cleared out and started to flow normal oil. I was pretty grossed out thinking this that was running in the engine. Anyways, the filter was changed and the plug put back in. I threw in 5 quarts of fresh oil and checked the dipstick.
Here's the worst part... I checked it 7 or 8 times 'cause I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The dipstick looked like it was 2-3 quarts overfilled. Apparently the pan is half full of that sludge. Or is there a chance a previous owner put in a different dipstick? As far as I know it's the right one with a yellow loop that's flat on the top.

You've got a tar-pit in there. I'd drop the pan and take a look.
No miracle cleaner's gonna help if it looks like that.
Also clean or replace your oil pressure sensor. Pressure might be good, but the sensor and tube are filled with gunk.
Mine wasn't as bad as you describe, so I didn't drop my pan, but cleaning the tube and replacing the sensor fixed my incorrect oil pressure gauge issue.
Remember that it's an ugly, greasy, messy job...
