Rebuilding 96 Aisin AX15 5 Speed
Has anyone rebuilt a Aisin AX15 5 speed here? Im doing this at home. I printed off some really good instructions off a thread I read here a week ago on how to rebuild this tranny. Ive almost read through it once(about 45 pages, in very good detail), and am going to read through it again, so Im familiar with the process, and then start on the disassembling the trannz. I seperated the transfer case and bell housing last night and have spent a couple hours scraping and brushing, then vaccuming all the crud off the outside. I love working on all of this, it actually makes me Happy and puts me in a good mood. This is the first trannsmission ive attempted to rebuild though, and I am a little apprehensive. Any stories and results of rebuilding one of these tough Japanese transmissions would be grearly appreciated. Also, what brand of rebuild kits did you use? What oil did you use for refill once rebuilt? I know that a GL4 or GL5 EP GEAR Oil(really meant for Highly loaded Diff gears) should be avoided because of the sulfer/phospherous in them that attacks the brass syncros(what I suspect happened to some point). GL3 gear oils are what ive seen most commonly recommended, but Ive also seen and been told 10w-30 and 10w-40 motor oil is recommended in the latter year AX15s. This trannz has almost 249,000 on it, and im thinking that a combination of High mileage, worn out clutch, and wrong oil are to blame for its demise. I just cant wait to see the syncros. Well, I have seen bits and chunks of them, In the oil I drained out. I dont ever want to see that again, so please Help and share.

Just curious if you finished your project and how it came out. I bought an ax15 out of a junkyard with the intention of rebuilding it. I've been looking for a good rebuilding manual. I have 278k on my current ax15, which is in a 1996 Cherokee sport, however I have put a transmission in every car I have ever owned, so I figured I'd go ahead and have a spare one ready for when I destroy my current one.
