You said 300 bucks for 2 that's 150 bucks for a trailer hitch,no way I'm paying 150 for a hitch that only has 1 attachment point when a full fledged recovery bumper has 2 and if you buy a set (front and rear)their around 300.If you really need a hitch you could buy and install one your self for way less than 150

 

i started a thread earlyer about detours C3R recovery tabs for class 3 hitched. if your looking for more attachment points and only have a hitch there a great thing to go with. then that would give you 3 points, or be able to leave the receiver open for other attachments you want to have but still have 2 recovery spots

 

don't matter if a recovery bumper has 3 points or not, you only use one at a time.
besides, a properly mounted hitch usually has more mounting points than a cheap recovery bumper.
i used a hitch with a warn shackle insert for years. i'd rather have my tug point in the center so it evens out the stress better.

 

again, the strap i posted should only be used with proper care and experience/common sense.

i agree, using a strap with a hook is frowned upon, and chains are an absolute no no.
but with the proper hook inserted into the frame, it won't just fall out, unless you happen to hook into the wrong slot and/or tear the frame, but again experience helps to determine which one is the reinforced recovery slot.

i have used it to tug pretty hard before, but not only do i double check my attachments, i triple check them, and use extreme caution when doing so.
also i walk before i run.

looping a strap through itself isn't the proper way either. so that just shows, many people misuse their equipment without knowing.
try removing the straps when you do this if there is enough of a pull to set the strap. sometimes it's impossible, requiring you to cut it off.

 

I got both a hitch and a bumper,obviously you want to pull or be pulled from the center IF possible that's a no brainer but not allways possible, a recovery bumper gives you some options ,and there is a difference between cheap and economical, a hitch is economical not cheap...and everbody I wheel with has no reservations about pulling me from my so called cheap recovery bumper as you put it ..

not saying your recovery bumper is cheap. never seen it.
but some are, and it matters what you use them for.

get one that bolts along the frame rail in the same manner as a hitch. this way the load is dispersed evenly.

recovery is a touchy subject among many wheelers. with the slightest error, it could turn fatal.

just use common sense, and know your ratings and how to properly use your equipment.
hate to see anyone here get hurt.

Wow, thanks everyone for the reply, my wants are a winch bumper with d rings for the front and a receiver for the rear but I have to save up. I live in a remote part of Montana, no junkyards anywhere close. I check craigslist and ebay every day for hitches but haven't found one yet. The bumper is gonna be expensive because we have a huge deer problem here and I need grill and lights protection.

I really liked the tow truck strap idea, I think that would work well, as long as I could get under the rig to install it and also if I were being winched out, not jerked out. I'm really hesitant to attach to the axles as I've seen several utube videos of axles pulled out from under Cherokees.

Keep the ideas coming, I talked to a buddy of mine today, we just might fab up a plate that bolts to the hitch bolts with a shackle attached just to get me by.

points to consider...

for a front recovery/winch bumper, look for one that has extended mounting brackets that go further along the frame rail, not just the stock 3 bolts per side.

as for the tow truck v-strap. i only use mine for pulling out cars with no aftermarket recovery points. i hook it to a strap with a d-shackle, or use my winch if i'm in the xj. it can work for off road, but you're better to just get the proper equipment on your rig.

when you fab up your plate, make it like a trailer hitch, mounting along both frame rails and your shackle attachment in the center. you could do just one, but that could be hard on your uni-body.
