Redneck wiring (help)
First time poster here, so bare with me.
I just bought a well used 93 XJ Sport 4.0 and I am trying to work out the kinks. The PO seemed to have trouble with the NSS and figured it was the ignition switch, so he wired it up where when you press the rear wiper button it turns the starter. I fixed the NSS and this button is scaring me because you can press it and start the engine in any gear, with the ignition on. Any ideas where to look to unhook this, as I would also like to use the rear wiper?

What exactly do I pull? I'm thinking he did the quickest fix possible...how would you guess he hooked this up to the starter? I looked under the dash and didn't see any obvious splicing or non-oem wiring going on. Is there something under the hood he could have just spliced into?

If it starts in any gear then he probly just spliced into the power wire that closes the starter relay especially if your switch isnt getting hot when you start it. You will need to trace it back and see where they spliced in. If you choose to keep the switch you can wire in your neutral safety switch back into the relay so it does not work unless the Jeep is in neutral.

look by the washer bottle. If he spliced into the rear wiper switch, the washer is the closest plug in the circut to the starter. trace the wires starting at the starter and work your way to the switch. If the PO used an existing switch it just makes sense to determine what he diconnected to make use of the switch. If you don't see any extra wires under the dash, look at the leads going to the rear wiper motor or water pump.

Thanks for all the help guys! I checked the starter solenoid (or whatever you call it) next to the starter and found his homemade wire bolted on to one of the posts. I disconnected it and the button is now disabled. I pulled the wire up through the engine bay and it goes up behind the washer bottle and looks to go into the firewall. I'm hoping I can figure out how to get the switch back to running the rear wiper, and hopefully the NSS will continue to work after I cleaned and lubed it.

You guys were right on the money. I took out the wiper reservoir and found that he had cut one of the wires for the rear switch and spliced a wire into that down to the starter solenoid. I removed his wiring and wired it back up, haven't yet tried the rear wiper...at least I disabled his NSS bypass.
Now if I can figure out why my dome light stays on all the time and why the front bumper lights don't work, I'll be golden on the electrical haha.
