Just did my headliner and console in charcoal felt. Matches decently. Looks nice. To bad my display doesn't work. Seen some nice camo at the store but I know this heavy duty felt holds up well. I have done three others the same and they still look great. Total cost was 25 bucks and took about three hours

Deleted the rear cargo light. Going to add 2 led strips, 1 on each side of rear trim panel. And a utility led in the rear hatch facing down when open.

Does anyone know if 97-up visors work on pre-97s?

i'm pretty sure they have damn near the same setup, just make sure you the get the visor retainer, ie the clip from a 97 too, not sure if they were different

That looks very cool. I need to do the same thing with mine, and soon. But, there's no way that cost you $25 total. A can of 3M adhesive is $20 out here (Seattle).

Give me a break down on the materials, please.

Nice looking job!

3 yards of 72" wide heavy duty felt 15$
Used most a couple feet left over.

Two cans of Permatex 118DA 12.00$
Only used 1.5 cans.

Here goes:

Remove all the trim/handles and rear seat belts holding the headliner in place. Also if you have a console, remove it.

Remove the old headliner panel.

Pull the fabric off.

Wipe clean. Dry rag.

Spray with glue until sticky and wet. Paying attention to crevasses and edges. Spray it evenly.

Lightly spray fabric. Have it hanging or have someone hold it up. Do it outside or in garage. Wear a mask. Your lungs will taste like glue if you do not. Yes. Taste like glue.

Drape over the old headliner panel. I setup a sheet of plywood on some horses.

Work it with clean or gloved hands from the center out.

Rub all the grooves until it's nice and smooth.

Trim it leaving about and inch over the edges. Leave a little extra on the windshield edge.

Respray and press the edges down. Take your time here. Pay special attention to the front edge by the windshield. It is the only exposed edge.

Trim it pretty close to the edges.

Heat gun. VERY VERY carefully. While wiping it with your hand. It will burn and distort easy if you make a mistake. Keep the heat just over your hand 8-10 inches away. Do the curves and edges. A hairdryer is probably safer if you are nervous.

Cut the holes out. From the top side. I use a haircutting scissor and an exacto. Cut them to leave a little material to fold and glue under the holes. Take your time doing this to avoid mistakes. However, the holes get covered pretty well usually.

The console, just disassemble it and use the same process. Rub the fabric until it forms the shape. Little heat to set it. Then cut the holes and tuck. May need heat around the small plastic edges. No mistakes here.

If you make a mistake, be sure to remove the material before the glue dries.

That's it. Let it dry for a while and reinstall.

Thanks for the information, and install steps.

I had not seen that Permatex product, which is about half the cost of the ones I'd seen recommended. The 3M headliner adhesive and the Permatex Heavy Duty adhesive are both close to $20 a can out here. I was figuring total project cost would be $75. Waiting for slightly warmer weather to get done.

Permitex does make decent stuff but 3m is honesty the best you can get. But in a situation like this your talking 10 years of durability vs 15 years

I am thinking of relining mine in multicam. Any idea how wide the headliner panel is? The fabric is 60" wide so I was wondering if I would have to see 2 panels together or use one sheet of fabric. Thanks guys

It's 52 wide I believe.

I have used 3m before on other projects(pricey), this Permatex works excellent with felt. It is very adequate for the material. Autozone sells the Permatex, are you sure it's 20$ there?

There is a fabric store here called JoAnn Fabrics. Filled with old ladies. They are online also.

Very interesting thread, doesn't sound like it's too hard to do. I plan on swapping out my saggy headliner with some camo fabric, just gotta find the time to do it.

Curious where you got the fabric from? I need to do this to mine and yours came out awesome. They have stuff at pepboys but I was iffy on I. Maybe I'll get the spray there and fabric elsewhere.
