It is a little unclear whether the below applies to your situation. Can you screw driver start it?

It does, I've test the continuity of the Cam and Crank sensor wires back to the ECU plug, based on what I read this morning (after seeing your reply) I should open it up and clean it no matter how this turns out.

I have a friend meeting me tonight to 'lend' me the ICM from his 89, if that works I'll have to squeeze the piggy bank to get one.

Well, that was what I consider and encouraging test.
A friend of a friend came over with his 89 MJ. We took his ICM and plugged it into my xj and it started up and idled pretty nicely.
I restarted a couple of times but didn't have a chance to run it or even let it warm up, but I think I will call some salvage yards and parts stores to see about getting one.
So far so good, and thanks to everyone.
