Your problem sou ds exactly my 89 was doing when the fuel pumps (long story) would start to fail. Can you hear it whining?

You said your fuel and filter was dirty. If you do end up changing the pump. I highly recommend dropping the tank and cleaning it as good as possible and changing the filter again......been there done that.
Fuel pump sounds normal, I've replaced it before. Fuel pressure is fine, even during the issue. Not sure if it's an issue, but maybe I'll bypass the ballast resistor anyways as a test.

Alrighty, fellas.. It is FIXED. Let me break it down for you... I bypassed the resistor, no change. It was worth a shot. I got the old stethoscope out again and checked the injectors, they were all clicking as they should be. Went over to the spark plugs, and noticed that the boot on the wire to plug #1 was broken, and it was actually arcing onto the engine. I had checked them before. But long story short, always double check the simple stuff. It is running smoother than ever now. Glad it is settled, however not glad I spent so much time wandering around when the answer was right in front of me. But, thus is life! It's a learning experience. Lol.

Thanks for the update and sticking with it.

You guys need to understand something about maintenance.
4.0s get plugs, wires, cap and rotor every 30,000 miles.
The factory recommendation was plugs, cap and rotor every 30,000 miles and 60,000 miles for wires.

At the dealership, we finally started doing the wires at 30,000 miles because they failed before 60,000 miles.

Yep. These plugs failed honestly after probably 15,000! I'm glad it's settled. By the way, does anybody have a working link to a replacement IAT? According to my REM it's a bit finnicky. It likes to jump 3-4 degrees at a time up and down. I can't find one anywhere, might have to test my luck at the junkyard.

Ever clean it? brake cleaner.

What spark plugs only lasted 15,000 miles?

You can't buy them in stores anymore, Trust me I tried. I finally found a good one in the junkyard. People say you can adapt a GM sensor to work, but I went with finding a Jeep one. I think I have one sitting around here somewhere I could pop in my jeep and see if it works

This just reminds me that I've got to change my plugs, wires, cap, & rotor very soon. The wires, cap, and rotor are over 30,000 miles and the plugs are either over or dang close.........

On one of my 90"s, I switched out the IAT for a 200 Ohm resistor. I forget why. Fine here in CA, got over 20 highway MPG after that at close to 300,000 miles, still runs fine today. My guess, the IAT might matter in extreme cold. It doesn't deem to mater much here.

That's tricking the computer into thinking your engine is breathing 200*F air? I think the IAT doesn't do much once you're warmed up and running off the O2 sensor. My 89 MJ originally got 24 highway. After regearing from the stock 3.07 to 4.11, 5" lift upfront, and spring over in the back, and 32s, now I get 15-17. :}
