93 4.0 XJ. What's the best way to replace the CPS - from the top or the bottom of the vehicle? Pretty tight squeeze...

 

bottom. u lay under the vehicle. your head behind the driver front tire, left leg in front of the passenger front tire, right leg behind.
that way, your left hand will access the cps from the engine side, and your right hand from the bellhousing side. shouldn't take long.
u need at least 16-18" extension.

 

dont know about the leg cofigurations but the extension part is the way to go the longer the better and a friend up top to help with the bolts so they dont fall in the bell housing wont hurt at all

I have a 1996 Cherokee which needed the CPS replaced. Fellas, I read a diiferent post and actually watched a YouTube video of a guy getting his hand up to the part and installing it with his hand. Either the guy had freakishly small hands, like the guy in the Burger King commercial, or he removed the front drive shaft, linkage, etc. After fighting and cursing, here's what worked for me:

I dropped the new CPS from the top of the motor. Attach a strong string or small rope so you can pull it back up. Get a wire coat hanger, straighten it, and insert it through the bolt hole of the CPS. Next, insert the coat hanger through the upper bolt hole of the bell housing. Have a helper gently pull the CPS up while you guide it along the coathanger using a socket extension. Following the coat hanger and using the socket extension as a guide, you'll have it place in no time. This is a little tricky, but sure is a heck-of-a-lot easier than trying to get your hand up there.

After the CPS is in the correct position, getting the bolts installed is a new adventure in frustration. Here's what I did:

I took the magnet out of a $1.99 pick up and placed it in the socket. This held the bolt firmly in place and allowed for a really quick installation. The magnet might "stick" to the bolt when you take the socket off, but you can get it off easily with the socket extension.

Anyway, after I figured out how to get this done, I agree that it's probably a 20-30 minute fix, but I managed to stretch it out to damn near a full day.
