Thank you for the advise, I will have to lift up on it when I go out next. I have noticed that when I open the door it does drop down slightly, maybe an 1/8" or less. I dont mind replacing pins or something, but I am not gonna spend an arm and a leg....I tried white lithium too and it didnt really help any. Not a big deal just annoying....gotta love the XJ.....

Well you do have to pull the pin on the door check so that it will open up wide enough to get at the hinge. The pic above is the door check and it's spring loaded. I took vise grips and clamped it on to the part in the door, then slightly closed the door to take tension off it. The pin pops right out then.

Be Careful. If you drill out the pin, you must be in the dead center, so use a center punch first.
Get some carbide drill bits. I tore threw about 10 hss bits trying to drill mine.
Mine is electric, and because of the wire harness I ended up trashing my hinge by elongating the holes from drilling at an angle. looks like I will be getting in and out through the passenger door or window for now.
Do I have to go to the dealer for a new hinge assembly??
I dont see how I could get one from the junkyard. They dont allow torches.

I replaced the pin in the drivers door of my '98 not to long ago. Door was sagging slightly. Used a dremel to dril it out etc. Not to complicated job.
However, I found out it wasn't the pin, but the hinge itself that was worn out! More difficult to replace at least for me, as it would involve welding.
I just adjusted the door and the door catch. Worked fine.

Well, this was about four years ago, 2011. I sold my Cherokee in 2012 when I left the USA to start a new assignement in Delhi, India.
Not to many Jeep Cherokees around for me to check, because I really cant remember. But I seem to recall that both the door and the door catch are bolted on. Loosening the bolt and repositing the hinge and catch might have done the trick.
But I'm just not sure. To long time ago. I'm hoping to buy another Jeep Cherokee at some point in the future if and when I move back to my home country the Netherlands. Loved my Jeep!

Step 1: Open door
Step 2: place vise grips on check arm
Step 3: use another pair of vise grips to squeeze pin
Step 4: pull out the pin
There was really a 2 page thread on this? lawl

The door catch is easy, the door hinge is a real bugger to undo.

Good info on the part #s,and using vice grips to release tension on the arm so the pin will pop right out. I need to do this on my dad's '96.

Not sure what a door catch is but I'm referring to the check arm and the retaining spring pin. That is what causes the pop like 99% of the time. Hinges last forever on these things.

But the pin in the door hinge does also wear. There are multiple theads on this forum. And as stated before they are a real bugger to get out.
