Default Replacing fan clutch

My fan clutch is shot. Anyone know the procedure for replacing it on an '87 cherokee? I can't figure out how to get it out.

They are much easier to replace with the radiator out. That way the radiator does not shred your knuckles. I think I have seen a write-up on it here on the site. Look around in the technical write-up section before attempting any repair. We may have something helpful there.

It's a cake walk!! As my boy Blue says, you'll be much happier pulling the rad out of the way!! Rads can bite!! Ask me how I know this!!

Well I don't, my hands are a little on the large side, so I had to pull it. I guess I'd look kinda stupid with tiny hands, I'm 6'5" and around 240lbs!! Burger King commercial comes to mind!!LOL!!

I got it replaced, unfortunately...the replacement fan clutch was a little bigger than the stock one and we broke the fan shroud (actually, my [idiot] dad broke it) when we were trying to get it back in. What all do I have to loosen to get about 1/2" wiggle in the radiator? I just need enough to get the replacement fan shroud back in.

Again it would be an easy job to remove the radiator and then slip the shroud over the fan. Then reinstall the radiator and then bolt the shroud back to the radiator. No broken parts and no skinned knuckles.

I broke my fan shroud, too, when replacing my fan clutch. I didn't have to take the radiator completely out to get the new shroud in. Just take off the crossmember that goes all the way across the top of the radiator (about 10 bolts). Then the rad is just held into place by two studs on the bottom that slip into rubber grommets. Just lift the passenger side of the rad to get one stud out and pull the rad toward the front. That will give you enough room to get the shroud in while keeping the fan installed.

Thanks man, sounds easy enough. Let's hope it goes down without any complications.
