BTW, use a brass drift if possible. You really don't want sparks. All that PB Blaster should probably make a spark difficult to generate but, even so...

If I was nearby, I'd help. It is not a fun job but not all that bad once you get rolling. PM me a phone number and I'll be happy to call you and see if I can help.

Also, make sure you've got less than a half tank of fuel or it is really going to be messy when that thing comes out of there.
Yeah I know I shouldn't worry about em and all. Just annoying. I went to NAPA to get a brass drift and they looked at me like I had 3 heads.... they were like ... here take this steel one it'll work. Now I am scared to even give it a good whack due to the possibility of ... well blowing up lol.

And yes according to the gas gauge I have less than half a tank lets hope it reads true.

Cover the end of the drift with duct tape or electrical tape. That'll help, anyway.

I did mine with a steel drift. There were no fumes present when I was removing the retaining ring. There were, of course, when I replaced it...so I seated the pump assembly and ring by hand and with a brass drift (can do the same with a screwdriver...just tap gently - all you're trying to do is seat it so it doesn't fall back out).

Then climb out from under and wait for twenty minutes until the fumes are pretty much gone. I rigged a household fan to blow on me and the area under the car constantly while I did this work. (This I thank the other guy who posted on fuel pump replacement...whose post I never found again. Very good idea, dude.) The fan kept me cool and the fumes dissapated. This brought my fear level down to a manageable level.

I HATE gasoline. Hate it hate it hate it. But I got this job done with minimum fanfare.

BTW, read my write-up on putting the pump back in. AGAIN, the other guy wrote this up originally and I just re-wrote it. It'll help when you realize you need to get the pump assemly aligned just right and then it slips right in easily. Until that magic alignment...it'll fight tooth and nail.

lol figures everything has to line up just perfect for it to work out right. Wish I had thought about wrapping it in electrical tape earlier... I would have never bothered buying the thing. I would have just wrapped up a screwdriver lol.

I really just want to get it home then I can work more comfortably. Still on a driveway with no shade but at least I don't have an audience and people walking by.

Plus it is my work place. And working here I know first hand how people complain about noise etc etc.

About to go talk to some of the guys in maint and see if they know an inexpensive towing company. I only live about 3-4 miles from work. Thinking Ill just bite the bullet and pay to have it towed back.

Really sucks not having any of you fellow XJers close by. This whole thing probably would have been done and over along with any followup problems lol.

Yeah it can get costly. Too bad you don't have towing coverage on your insurance.

That sucks. Towing/road service adds very little to your rates.

just an update for everyone who has been helping me out with this. Today it was WAY too hot to be working outside so I figured the day was bust. Then it poured rain just as I thought I could do something different with the jeep instead of working on the fuel pump issue (putting on the baja lights for example)

So it rained ... nope cant do the lights in the rain.

Then it finally cooled off a little later. I climbed back under there and gave that ring a good degreasing and soak in PB blaster.

to make a long story short....I FINALLY got that sucker to move and got the fuel pump out. Turns out it takes more of a pounding than I thought it would. Now the fun part begins..... putting the new one in.

Again thanks for the help to all those who offered advice.

Quick question. ... The fuel feed line goes to the filter and the return line just comes back to the tank right?

That's the way it's supposed to be.

Got it... thanks ... I um... kinda just started ripping hose out and forgot to make little mental notes ...

The good news.....pump, filter, cam ring all back in place, now just fitting hose, clamps and hooking the power back up.

Crossing my fingers that it comes back to life.

Thanks!

Did you use new hose specified for fuel injection and new clamps?

Well. I know I got new clamps and and I told the guys at NAPA that were working with me that it was Fuel Injected.

Got everything hooked back up and it still won't start.

Cranks just fine but won't turn over.

Did you give it time to get fuel back to the motor?

Well I turned it on and off a few times.

Should I just turn it on and leave in the on position?

About how long?
