Tomorrow I will be wanting to do a quick check of the relay for the fuel pump as I can't hear it come on. What one is the fuel relay and what one can I swap it with to check this?

The relay is only about 10$ so buying a new one isn't a huge deal just need to know what one it is and what one to test it with.

thanks again.

Ballast resistor?

Would a bad ballast resistor cause these kinds of problems too?

I keep adding questions up here just trying to figure out what the heck is going on. This is my only vehicle so I need to get it up and running again. I don't have access to another vehicle or anything. I have already paid too much in cab fare.

Hope someone is able to come up with more ideas. I am at a loss.

Just had to get that off my shoulders.

Swapped out the relay with a different one just on the off chance that it worked.... no such luck.

oh well. Guess Ill be pulling the pump back out in the next few days.

Yeah the ballast resistor could cause it. Run a wire between the two posts to fond out. Pull the connectors off, run a wire between the two posts, then put the connectors back on. If it starts and runs okay shut it off and get a new ballast resistor. Don't drive very far with the wire on there.

If you don't know what it looks like this has something about it. Scroll down, it's with the EGR write up. http://web.archive.org/web/200803151...iagnostics.htm

Thanks for the info though.

OK. I am sure everyone is getting tired of seeing this thread and I can' tell you all how much I appreciate your assistance, information and suggestions. I know this has been beaten to death from every possible angle.

However,

I have been sitting here looking through the manual and I started to wonder about the feed and return lines. I am about 90% sure I hooked them up correctly and I am going to triple check tomorrow before work but I also want to ask here to see if something like this could also cause the problem I have been having.

If the feed and return lines are somehow reversed would I still get fuel at the rail and no pressure or would I get no fuel at all?

Once again....thanks for any and all input on this matter.

LOL....good luck man. Hopefully you don't have to drop your tank. I can't remember what year they changed it.

Helpful hint if you have never done it before degreaser and some kind of brush to get it cleaned up. and of course PB blaster. I had to pound the #$%# out of that ring to get it to move but once it started moving it was pretty easy.

I have come back around to thinking it is a bad pump. I am not gettting fuel to the fuel rail at all any more.

Is there a safe way to test the fuel pump for activity while outside the tank? I want to be able to take it out of the tank and put power to it to see if I get any humming or anything. Just want to determine if the pump is bad or if the power to the pump via my xj is the problem. I have one of those 6v square batteries if that would work.

I am just trying to find the actual problem as to why this thing won't start. as for the CPS Yeah I want to replace that too just to be on the safe side but I only want to make ONE trip to the auto parts store next time I go.

Thanks again for any info.

In the link towards the front of this thread about changing fuel pump, the author mentioned he had to replace a fusible link. Maybe that's what you guys are calling a ballast resister?

Well I tried that with no change in behavior.

In order to see if it is actually the pump I can put some starter fluid down through the butterfly valve right? I have some seafoam or some gas. would that work?
