Default Replacing hard trans lines to/from radiator with fuel hose + barbed fittings

My trans is an AW4. I want to "delete" the to/from hardlines from the trans to the radiator and use soft lines instead. I have had multiple problems with those hardlines and that would be solved by replacing with barbed fittings and fuel line.

Problem I am having is finding out exactly WHICH fittings will work for this. I ordered 2 sets of the Hayden 391 transmission fittings, but those "make/mode tools" on websites are wrong a lot.

Will those 4 (2 male / 2 female) Hayden 391 fittings work on the AW4? If so, then since the barbs are 3/8" (I think) and that answers my question about the ID of the fuel line. Is that right? 3/8" ID? If they won't work I'd like to know so I can order the others. I can't drive the Jeep until I fix this. It's p*ssing fluid.

Thank you!!

Just want to reword this so I get a little more useful information. What is the thread size on the transmission side for both in and out ports? What is the thread size on the radiator side for both?

good questions, and I hope you get an answer

the only thing I can add that may be helpful, is that at least one of the outlets from radiator is a short flared pipe, so imo, you do not have to alter this (I didnt)

cant remember what the other radiator outlet has

someone previously had an issue when undoing the long "nuts" on the trans that surround the hard line exit, unexpectedly broke

(I have a spare trans, and the steel outlet lines with plastic tabs are looking very ratty, I would like a way to make sure they are useable)

The only problem with running hose all the way is it sagging and getting caught on something while driving. If it were mine, I would use 3/8" steel fuel line except for about 6" rubber at the transmission ends and 9-12" at the radiator. If you insist on using hose, use hydraulic hose that's more rigid and support it at many spots along the way. Remember it normally runs about 220*+ coming off the converter. The pressure is only about 40 psi at most since it's an open-ended flow back to the pan, but it does get quite hot.

The best and easiest way to do this is to remove the original pipes and cut them short near the ends, then start forming a bubble with a flaring tool for the hose to fit over and not blow off and clamp them. This way you don't have to mess with the threaded fittings. The fittings in the transmission are steel threaded into cast aluminum and are exposed to all kinds of corrosion down there and can break out parts of the casting very easily. They are probably installed with Locktite anyway. I would be reluctant to try to remove them myself.

What I did with 2 of my Chevy trucks was run hose from the transmission pipes to steel pipes on the frame instead of along the oil pan. This way engine motion didn't constantly vibrate them.

The AW4 is not a Jeep/Dodge transmission. It's Japanese (Aisin Warner 4), The fluid ports are metric 14mmx1.5, so those 5/8" thread Hayden 391's are not going to work on the tranny side. Here's a couple of threads with part numbers and thread info for adapting the trans to standard AN fittings.

These can be used on the transmission side, so I am trying to find the rest of the fittings for braided line now. I have no experience with AN stuff, so it's a little difficult, but I know those are right.
