Replacing head, after PO used stopleak in cooling sytem
Hi all,
I'm looking for some advice. I have a 2000 xj with the 0331 head that I'm pretty sure is cracked. I'm just about to order parts when I got to thinking.
The previous owner put stop leak in the coolant. If I drain the cooling system, and take the head off, will it react with the air and coat the inside of the block? I know that stuff is supposed to find the air and harden up. I'm just concerned about blocking passages in the block or heater core etc. Thanks

I'd flush it before pulling it apart. Then I'd flush it a lot more after I got it apart.
And I'd assume the radiator is toast.

New water pump too. That crap gets in the bearings and destroys them. I discovered the PO used stopleak on a ZJ I bought after the waterpump bearing spit chunks out the front and every thing was full of brown cement. Had to take tow it home because it wasn't fun having the fan flopping around hitting the radiator as a result.

Fit a prestone flush n fill kit to the heater hose, and flush as per instruction. a coolant system cleaner can also be used. do this! Leak stop in there is not all that bad, but you want to remove it using the flushing and chemical cleaners. I have had some cars with that stuff in it, they lived.

Water pump (not waterproof)
Same happened to me. A mech used stopleak cause a freeze plug had moved during a bitter winter. Jeep was stored outside in subzero months while I was away. Yes your radiator is shot. Flush and re flush then flush again before new head. As other reply said, you will need new waterproof,p too. Good luck.

Head flush
Just went through this. Replaced every cooling component except radiator. When I put it all back together I left the thermostat out while I flushed it after head install. Flushed the hell out of it. Even ran the engine will I was flushing. Only do that will the engine was cool. Once I flushed it to my liking and just added the thermostat and coolant back. I will check it frequently and flush when required. I left the flush adapter in the heater hose to accommodate.
