My steering gear is Red Head, and their site says that " Dextron 3, or comparable fluid, would be a safe bet". My pump is OEM, we'll see how the seals will hold up. I'm curious now if anyone had issues with ATF.

Okay, near as I can tell the XJ supposed to take Power Steering Fluid +4 and ATF+4 is acceptable.

My WJ, on the other hand, requires Mopar MS5931 ONLY. ATF+4 is MS9602 and SHOULD NOT BE USED. The WJ's with the hydraulic cooling fan use MS10838. This information is from TSB 1900503 dated 08/29/03.

The Mopar Part Number for MS5931 is 04883077 (quart) I know this is for my WJ, but it shows that even the dealers don't know what they are doing.

reference "Bob's The Oil Guy."

Rockauto lists different part numbers for XJ and WJ pumps.

atf has friction modifiers and detergents that help keep your trans clean, while psf has oil for lubricating.

atf dexron 3 is generally ok for power steering, infact, toyota uses it and recommends it.

Geez, is it installed and running yet?

Little leak. No pressure. Regular old power steering fluid. Lube the o-rings.

is that @ me cruiser?
Not yet.... she's sitting in the driveway right now... will get to it this week some time.... fortunately I work remotely most of the time so if she's out of commission for a few days it's generally not a big deal. I just posted here ahead of time to give time for responses so that I didn't have an "oh crap" moment by putting the wrong fluid back in it. And if ATF was bad for the XJ.... then i would siphon as much of it out as possible and replace it with what is best. So that's the answer I'm trying to get to with this thread

ATF has additives but power steering fluid doesn't? Power Steering fluid has a way more robust additive package than any ATF. ATF is all about viscosity and that's about it. Manufacturers began using ATF in power steering units to save money. There isn't an ATF on the planet that can outperform a power steering fluid. You notice how drag cars run John Deer hydraulic tractor oil in their powerglides? Below are the additive packages for ATF v Power Steering Fluid.

Would it jack anything if I don't quite get all of the ATF out of there and I go with power steering fluid?
I mean dang... it looks like neither one will cause damage to the system...but if one has more benefits long term... I'd rather go that direction.

It wouldn't be any different than how it is currently. If it worries you, drive it for a while and then do a fluid change.
