Default 4.0 oil pump replacement OH NO I Didn't

It has been over 25 years since I replaced an oil pump so I forgot to pack the new one with vaseline. I realized my mistake as soon as I fired her up and had no oil pressure. Do I have any options other than pulling the oil pan back off and trying again?

You could always find an old distributor and pull the shaft and put it in a drill and turn the pump that way. Just be sure you rotate it the right direction.

I went to the local hardware store and got a length of 3/8" round bar for a couple bucks. Slot the end so it fits down over the oil pump shaft under the distributor, and spin away.

I used a grinder with a cut off wheel. it doesn't need a perfect fit nor finish.

Turn key to run position and have a helper watch the gauge to let you know you are spinning it in the correct direction.

I'm doing this as well but it looks like the 4 bolts for the two exhaust pipes that go to the manifold is hard to get to. Maybe it's easier than it looks because I haven't try to take them out yet?

Yup. Just remove oil filter and inject oil into outer hole with a pump type squirt can. This will send oil into pump. Pump does not need to be full of oil,it just needs to be wet enough to create a seal on the gears. Unless this is a new engine that has not been run don't worry about running engine a short time without pressure, the residual oil on bearings will protect them until pressure builds.

I found that re-installing the pan, it's MUCH easier to clean the engine block-sump gasket surface, apply black RTV to the block surface and slap the NEW rubber pan gasket on the block. Use several pan bolts to hold the gasket on for a few hours until the RTV sets up.

Remove the bolts and carefully install the pan. I tried it a few other ways and ALWAYS bunched up the gasket at the rear crank area causing massive oil leaks.

Installed a Melling High Volume pump on my 1992. Had to beat the pan out to make the new pump fit. Ended up splitting the pan and had to braze the crack. Did NOT help my very low oil PSI though. Still driving around at 10PSI hot on the interstate. Been like 8 years now too.

Why not just pull the dizzy or cam sensor and prime the the pump? I made my pump primer out of a cheap long shank spade bit.

I find it easier to remove the oil filter and squirt a few ounces of oil into the outside hole. Unless it is a new or rebuilt engine I usually just start engine and let it prime itself.

I was doing some research and was wondering if you had to take the timing chain and stuff out to get to the oil pump? I changed my oil pressure sensor already and it didn't fix my problem.... I have an 01 jeep grand cherokee laredo 4.0 RWD

Can I take the oil pump from my 94 xj and put it in my 98xj? I know it's probably a dumb *** question but I'm just making sure
