Replacing radiator - do I need a separate transmission oil cooler?
99 Jeep Cherokee Sport, 4.0
I'm going to install this radiator .
I drive mostly in town, stop and go traffic. I never tow anything.
Is there a transmission oil cooler built into this radiator? If not, should I add an external one? Would it be ok to install the radiator "as is" and add a transmission cooler later, perhaps in six months? Thanks.

yes, that radiator is set up for auto, with trans cooler lines. that's the brass fittings on the left tank. if it were for a standard shift jeep, those brass lines would be removed and capped.
you can install a trans cooler later, if you think you need more trans cooling. if you're running larger tires or towing, it could be beneficial adding one. especially if you do both.

I would look for same model Cherokee with a factory towing package option in U-Pull salvage yard for the external, or additional AT oil cooling parts you will need.
Should be easy to install and look original.

B&M makes a great external trans cooler, use that in connection with the stock one in the radiator. hell, i think i have two externals, along with the stock radiator. heat kills our AW4 transmissions.

When I asked about an additional oil cooler, I was advised that my daily driving and infrequent light towing would not be worth adding an additional cooler.
Personally the only time that I think it'd be worth it in normal driving conditions is if you have a lot of hills putting the torque converter to work.
