Replcint an 0331 head (2001 4.0L)
I would like to replace the head on my 2001 60th anniversary Cherokee 4.0L. I have 185k miles on the engine and it runs well My issue is when I changed the oil I had it sent to Blackstone and in the hot months they have fond coolant in the oil. I've had the issue for a few years and I've been taking care of it by changing the oilevery 2500 miles. My mechanic doesn't see any crack in the head.
I plan on keeping this car for many years and I want to be proactive in maintaining it. I am driving a 20 year old car and in 20 years I'd like to be driving a 40 year old car.
My question is what are all of the parts necessary to change the head? If there are any old threads that outline it, please direct me to them as I am sure this has been gone over in the past.
Thanks in advance for all of your help

BTW, does anyone know what the equivalent trim package the 60th anniversary is compared to the normal trim packages? Limited, SE, etc?

- Head.
- Head gasket.
- Valve cover gasket. (Might not be absolutely necessary, but you'd be stupid to not replace it while you have it off.)
- Thermostat housing gasket.
- Thermostat. (Again, not absolutely necessary, but ...)
- Exhaust/Intake gasket.
Also a good idea while you are in that far:
- Water pump.
- Water pump gasket.
- Radiator hoses.
- Heater hoses.
- Plugs.
- Oil filter adapter, if it's leaking.
- Splanametric sternabulator.
Did I miss anything, folks?

Head bolts?
Or did I just miss that in your list.
I have heard that you can reuse them if the head has never been removed.
I always figured I would splurge on this if I ever do mine.
https://www.boostwerksengineering.co...-V20_p_39.html
Or something similar.
As far as the 60th anniversary XJ goes I have always been a little confused by that.
Never seen one up close and personal. Just on the internet.
But best I can tell it is just a basic XJ with a badge and the '98 Grand Cherokee 5.9 wheels.
Seeing how it is the 60th anniversary I would expect that it would have all the bells and whistles.
Maybe you had to order it that way.
I just figured it would be like a "package deal" type thing.

Just replaced mine, well gave the business to my cousin's shop bc my jeep is my DD and I work 50hrs a week lol.
I ordered my head from clear water cylinder heads on the rec of many threads here. Despite website saying please allow for 1-3 weeks for shipping I rec'd mine in 5 days (order Monday afternoon arrived saturday) and I'm in NJ. I got the complete version with no gaskets and instead I went with felpro gasket set from amazon along with the bolts. Mind you I'm mad mad my head went in the middle of global pandemic bc the head cost like an extra $200 lol compared to what people said they paid, unless they actually have no idea how much they paid lol.
All in all I was in maybe I think $1400 for parts and labor. If doing yourself i reckon you'd be about $800 in max. That head, the gasket set and bolts gives you everything you need minus odds and ends that may break along the way.
Here's link for head

if you search head gasket set you can get them in mamy places from many brands. Even from autozone, etc. That I'd say the consensus is pick your favorite. I've done fel pro everything else so.
Also BlueRidgeMark has a good outline! I would say the optionals were inspected and deemed ok for me. I replaced some hoses and and other stuff in the last 1-3 yrs. I popped in new spark plugs while I was at it though.

Since you said you want to drive the 20 year old XJ for another 20 more years, I'd also add to the list since you are in there;
- 2 row radiator. Why not? It's probably 20 years old.
- Hesco waterpump.
- Hesco thermostat housing.
- Silicone radiator hoses & heater hoses.
- Have you considered a performance exhaust manifold header?
I'd also consider a "TUPY" junkyard head & have it rebuilt, as opposed to the Clearwater cylinder head.
- I've heard tales about new / rebuilt heads having higher compression & now blowby past the piston rings is being created.
As for the 60th Anniversary XJ, it's a strange one. I assume since the XJ was being phased out & the KJ (Liberty) brought in, DaimlerChrysler wanted to clean out their parts bin. As I'm finding out in the U.K., the 60th Anniversary is basically a Limited. Also, the 60th Anniversary in the U.K., got the 16" Icon Rims.

I'll have my mechanic of 30 years do all the work. I work full time but I want it done right (that's the main reason why I wont do it myself)
I heard that replacing the 0331 head also requires replacing lots of other stuff like the exhaust manifold, EFI rail, etc.
Is the Clearwater head able to bolt on without changing everything else around it?
I'd like to get a list of all the parts we need so that it can be done with as few snags as possible. What I'm looking for is a shopping list of the main parts. While we have everything apart we'll also be replacing other things like water pump, etc. I have kept up with changing hoses, wires, plugs, etc on a regular basis. I just replace the blinker fluid and it bumped saw an improvement in my MPG!
I also like the idea of replacing the radiator with a double row one. I will be moving to Florida in a few years and know heat management will be a priority.
When I did a search for other head swaps it came back empty. Can anyone do a search for me? Hopefully someone has done this swap and has documented it.

Maybe if someone is crossing years? I can certainly see that being a problem with some years.

I'm going to go with a Clearwater cylinder head. Any suggestions about where to source all of the other parts that are good quality? Gasket, head bolts, etc? I want to do it right the first time (and hopefully the last time)
