For example, if you were working out a flight plan (or rocket plan :-)), you would calculate your estimated fuel burn based on the average fuel burn of the aircraft (at a given RPM setting) and time. You would not rely on the fuel gauges.
You compare filling up your Cherokee to how NASA calculates how much fuel to use in rockets and airplanes? You, sir have WAY too much idle time on your hands. I worked for NASA for over 20 years, and I know rocket scientists who aren't as **** as that, LMAO

Perhaps the rocket reference was too "out of this world", but it seemed to be a good example in order to address some misunderstandings of the concept.

Here are some other more terrestrial examples of how this information could be usefull.

A night watch security guard who needs to know how long his vehicle is capable of idling.

A family out camping that uses the vehicle to generate electricity.

And lastly,
Lets assume its 6 months past the begining of the zombie apocalypse. Your compound has contracted you and your xj to transport much needed medical supplies to a security outpost thats several hundred miles away. Traveling with fuel cans only attracts the attention of bandits. Can the xj make it to its destination on one tank of gas?
