Retarted question

I watched a video on you tube where the guys xj sounded exactly like mine dose. So I think I'm going to replace my head. Anyone have any suggestions for where to eat a decent one from?

Oh I saw the '89 at the end of your name and assumed you had a Renix. '00 are notorious for cracked heads so its probably good you've found a new one. I think you can get a different casting though to avoid cracking the head again.

Hey I dont mean to piggy back this thread but somewhere on my engine I am leaking oil and its not at the drain plug. I am thinking its from a damaged or worn gasket either a valve gasket or head, dont know which.

Was wondering if I was the only one that noticed that.
OP don't start buying lifters and such just because someones rig on youtube sounds "exactly" like yours. As long as you still have good oil pressure, pull off the head and see whats goin on. As far as down time goes I'd say about a week if you have to send your head to a machine shop. If you already have a new head I'd say a weekend. Good luck

For myself it was easier to disconnect the exhaust and harness and such, then pull the whole head assembly out and finish tearing it apart. Put it back together on the bench and put it back in assembled. Did get some neighborly help putting it back in.

Leaking coolant into your oil is an almost definite indicator of a broken head gasket or head. If it is the head gasket only, you'll be able to remove the head and see the damage to the gasket. If the cylinder head is cracked (which you may not be able to see (google magnaflluxing)) then you'll need a new cylinder head, and they usually come with the lifters installed and torqued to spec (you also have the option of welding it but I wouldn't go that route...). In either case, you should check the torque of the lifter bolts prior to bolting the valve cover down. If your old cylinder head is intact you might as well bring it to a machine shop to have it surfaced- this will ensure a completely flat surface for the new gasket to be sandwiched between (BONUS- surfacing your head usually results in higher compression).
Lifters are in the block not on the head.
I honestly would get a used engine from a 98 and older(still HO) and bolt it into yours. make two straps to hold the coil rail and have a new flange welded onto the exhaust to make it fit. then you eliminate the chances of a repeat as the late production 99-01's like to crack (some have fixed it but its $$$$ for a head that your going to bolt onto a worn/bad engine)
Correct!
Also Jeeps are known for noises. Cracked flex plates are common, lifters are too, could also have a bent push rod or even a main bearing or rod knock, even piston slap. In most cases basing all of your diag off a youtube video is like me trying to guess what your noise is over Text.

How do I remove the plastic lane that one of the wiring harnesses runs through? It's plastic and protects the driver side wires for the fuel injectors. I don't really want to break it off but I'm tempted in doing so

ditch it. cap the hole at the filter and go to the parts store and get a small breather filter. ask the kid at the counter to go get an adult and ask the adult for a breather filter for your valve cover.
or
go to the Junk Yard and get an OEM replacement.
