Reunited with my 88 Cherokee
New member...I bought a brand new Cherokee Laredo in 1988, sold it privately in 1990 with about 5k miles...Last week the fellow I sold it to, gave it back to me with 210k miles in pretty rough condition, not running due to a faulty fuel pump...Replacing the pump is not an issue, but I'm fearful the gas tank is in pretty rusted condition. The Jeep has a factory class3 hitch, as with the factory skid plate option....The bolts that hold the hitch & skid plate are rusted to the point that cannot be removed with a 1/2 inch drive...I'm afraid to heat the frame rail with a torch, due to vapors in the gas tank.....my question: Has anyone removed these bolts is a very rusted condition???

Pull the fuel pump and look. It might not be rusty inside the tank.

I removed those bolts from my 98. The nut strips and those square pieces that sit inside the frame were very rusty. It took alot of back and forth ugga dugga with an impact gun and alot of leverage with a breaker bar but eventually they all came out. It was very very much the opposite of fun.

Back in 88 Cherokee's weren't all that popular...the 4 dr. S Blazer with the 4.3 had the edge...with Bronco ll struggling behind.... The beaches of Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket in Massachusetts were loaded with Cherokee's as they out performed most 4X4 driving on the soft sand....that was my introduction & ordered my Laredo, now its 4 dr Wranglers. The next two years vacations were on the beach both on Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket....Sold my 88 in 1990 & in 1994 ordered a Cherokee Sport 4.0 High Output....with the rapping engine out of the gate...piston slap, Chrysler got their hands on it and as usual screwed up a good thing....(research the current 5.7 hemi in the Rams/Chargers) I lost my *** on the 94 & ended up with a 96 2 dr SE with a 5 speed...which was excellent, sold that with 260k ran like a top, no issues what so ever.... Had a bunch since then but by far the 1998 was probably the best as it was so fine tuned on the drawing board it was hard to find fault other than the rusted rocker panels...I also currently have a 88 Comanche 4x4 restored....Neither of my 88's will ever be for sale....The set of pics (4) was the day I brought home my 88, from Redston Jeep in Wappengers Falls NY (long gone now, I picked it up just as it came off the car carrier, I refused any dealer prep). My son standing near the fender, he was 6 yrs old then...now he's 39.... Now this is an interesting story.......

I'd be more pissed the jeep was in crappy shape than having to replace a fuel pump or something.... Apparently in such bad shape he GAVE it back to you like he just wanted it off his hands hahaha...

How many people would have this opportunity to be given back a vehicle that they bought new 33 years ago, regardless of condition? I consider myself lucky...By the way he too is retired from the air National Guard...Stewart Field Newburgh NY, Westover in Massachusetts.......This Friday we will be celebrating his 84 Birthday.........ha ha ha....back atcha

Yeah the idea is cool. Maybe it can turn into a fairy tale ending where you restore it and make it really nice again. Could be a good story to follow if you decide to restore and take a crap ton of pictures to put up here.

Not sure how involved I'm going to get in a restoration....@70 don't want to waste too much time working on vehicles, lost most of my life to them already...I have a big enough fleet to keep up with already....If I didn't take it most likely it would have went to junk...then there might of been the potential that somebody would have put a fuel pump in it & go 4 wheeling in the woods putting to its death...Too many of them are getting destroyed already youtube is filled with Cherokee's put to their death.....
