My guess is its your neutral safety switch.

But i would start off from the wiring leading to the lights, maybe a loose connection.

Do you sometimes have to put it in Neutral in order to start?

You have an auto, right? If you put it in reverse and wiggle it forward & backwards to get your reverse lights to go on and off, then the problem is most likely your neutral safety switch. It needs to be cleaned. Thankfully, it's very easy to do, even for the most basic of garage mechanics. I just did mine a couple of days ago. Search "neuatral safety switch" and there are plenty of website references on here.

I've got the same problem and no I have never had to start it in neutral either. Wiggling it doesn't help. Let me know what you find.

I had the same problem. I pulled the bulb and cleaned the contacts and now they work great.

Yeah, the first thing I did was change the bulbs. If that doesn't do it, I would R&R your neutral safety switch. It probably needs it anyway and it'll only take a couple of hours. Just do your homework first so you know what to expect.

DISASSEMBLED NSS (BEFORE CLEANING) The photo doesn't show how gunky it was. Plus, one of the contacts in the control arm was stuck in a way that it was no longer touching the contact circuit. That was the real problem why my backup lights no longer worked.
