No clue. Hasn't come back. Last time it did was when I made an 100+mile trip and hot-doggin' it. I realized it only does it after and hour or more of driving on the highway.. It sounds a lot like a fan blade hitting the shroud - but that's not that case lol

Check the Flex-Plate. I had the same problem it sounded like a wrist pin banging around. I checked the flex-plate by moving it back and forth. saw some movement here's a pic of the one I replaced.

Well I just got a XJ for a steal cause of loose Torque converter bolts and I but them back in and tightened them with red thread lock and I still have a little tick but it goes away under load so I think it is a wrist pin. Wrist pin knock usually goes away under load.

I bought a 95 cheap with same noise. Changed Harmonic Balancer, knock is still there. Checked flex plate bolts, not sure how many supposed to have? The two I have checked so far were tight. How many were you missing? Thanks Stoney

My xj has some rod knock mostly at idle, it sounds like a diesel. I started running 20w50 oil, took care of most of the noise. I think its about time for a rebuild.

Hi!
I have a grand cherokee 2000 4 litres and i've noticed on the Torque converter bolts hit the plate betwen the enging and the transmition!!!! the 4 bolts are tight . the question is can i have a cracked flexplate or this is more serious probleme like cranck shaft bearing ?
