Sounds to me like the flex plate is cracked allowing the bolts to hit. The plate can easily move that far when cracked (very small clearance.) Good Luck!

this was realy a cracked flex plate my problem but now i can concentrate to my other probleme maybe u can help again to pinpoint

2 month ago I had a problem with one spark plug, the inside drop in the engine on the high way.. I replaced all the spark plug and start the engine I’ve noticed a valve problem. I removed the head and replace 1 valve and at the same time changed all the lifter hydraulic du to a probleme with them . I start the engine and run well i was really happy .
but 2 week later the engine have started to knock or a tap.. That more noticeable when the engine is in cold condition and when the engine got warmed I can hear a little bit the knock or tap and if i play with the throttle i hear it from the top but not sure really hard to pinpoint
so what do you think about it?

thanks

Angry help

I have a 1991 Jeep Cherokee, my first one. I know nothing about jeeps. When i start it makes a loud knocking sound but then goes away, piston #6 or #1 the one closest to the firewall sounds funny or at least in that area of the engine. It also makes a ticking sound when driving that gets faster as i drive and slows down when i slow down. Please help a NOOB out. Thank You

You would want to check the flexplate first then the harmonic balancer. Do a search of this forum and use the info you get to diagnose the problem. When asking for help it is always helpful to include engine size, transmission type and mileage. Good luck hunting!

I tighten up my flywheel bolts about a month ago, all of them were loose. The noise would come and go but would mainly happen after I was driving for awhile and when I got on the gas hard. The noise was a REAL loud metal on metal sound that kinda sounded like a fast tapping, sounded almost too fast to be pistons or valves.

Hmmm...similar sound under my 92/93 XJ. Glad it could be something other than rods!

Sorry it is a straight 6, Automatic trans, and it has about 220k miles on it. I still have not started working on it or even looking at it because i am unsure of what the sound is, i dont want to go through the hassle of dealing with the flexplate and find out its not the problem. Thank You for all your help, if anyone has pictures of where the access to the flexplate is that would help a lot. I'm planning on getting a book to help me out with this as well. Thank you again.
