Roof Rack
Hello All. I have a 92 with a factory roof rack. Am I better off mounting something to the factory rack? Or am I better off finding a complete rack, yakima...thule...or something else.
Thanks for you info.

From what I've found the factory rack can support 150lbs which is quite a bit. Depends what you're looking to carry thought. If you're looking at carrying bike (like myself) you can get Thule Ride-a-Longs I think they're called to adapt your factory load bars to theirs which you could mount any number of other things on. Bike carriers, kayak carriers, snow board etc. Most cargo holders should mount right on though. Another thing to look at is price. Typically roof racks new are quite expensive, usually $500+ for everything. I'm sure there's plenty of used parts floating around though.

i put a homebrew basket onto my factory rack. it can hold me no prob. i have 4 lights on the roof and i run through thick tree all the time and it dont budge. at ont point i had 10 car tires 4 with wheels all in the basket and it held all that just fine(not that that makes it a good idea). from my experince the factory rack holds real strong.

The factory rack, for mine anyway, is rated for about 200#, find out what yours is rated, if your going to exceed that only then do you have to be concerned.

Cool Thanks all. I have found some racks on CL that were resonable, but was not sure if I wanted to go that way.
Things I plan to carry.
Highlift jack, spare tire, gas can, bike or 4, shovel, an elk...well hopefully.
Anyway you get the point.
I think I will stick with the factory rack and adopt it to my needs.
