Default Rough driving and codes

Basically my xj will run just fine in park/neutral and reverse. As soon as I put it into drive it will start to “put put” under any gas load. Once I get above 20Mph the rpm’s will even out and it’ll drive like normal. It tends to act like it’s out of gas when the engines warmed.

I ran my codes and it came back with a evap code (I found the break in the line and fixed it. Code didn’t come back) and a p0705 which is the transmission range sensor.

I just replaced my spark plugs and coil pack, so I don’t think it’s a sparking issue.

I need as much help as I can get, thank you

Simple stuff first. Start with testing your fuel pressure; this absolutely needs to be ruled in or out early in the troubleshooting process.

You must use a fuel pressure gauge for this. If you don't have access to one, many parts will rent you this tool very inexpensively, call around for availability. The fuel pressure gauge is very easy to use by installing it on the "schrader valve" on the fuel line under the hood.

For a 2000, you should have 49 psi plus or minus around 5 psi.

Good luck and keep us updated!

Thank you for the response and i checked my gas pressure and it was good.

I replaced my evap purge cylinder.(which I thought would solve my problem)

Now if I clear my CEL it’ll drive and run perfect but as soon as the CEL turns on then it idles rough and will barely have enough fuel to drive.

I’ve noticed that the CEL will only turn on when my interior fuse 10 blows (“Starter” fuse).

I looked under the hood and saw that my ground that goes to where the dipstick is, is all bare wire so I cut it down and krempt a new O adapter on it.

Thank you, Wheeler
