This probably is rellavant but I thought I'd share, few years back when I had my 98 I had the same issue. I ending up thinking it was my injectors I know my xj was newer and didn't have the renix but it turned out to be both upper and lower o2 sensors.

Well while I have things apart the sensors will come out to be cleaned. Thanks for the links!

Much thanks again Pete. 70%....I'm extra interested in this since it comes up. Mine acted similar, (with backfiring in the intake, also), when those wires to the temp/knock, or 02 where grounding.

I wonder, could it be, the "default" get's you by through low and medium rpm, but you need to kick into open loop (70% +), to get enough fuel for more RPM/harder acceleration.

does the cat (lower) 02 sensor really do anything for you?

We don't have but one O2 sensor.

90 was the last year for Renix, just one there I guess. I've seen allot of posts saying the rear sensor on the newer is only to monitor cat function. (and cause headaches). Only the front "effects injector pulse length".

I haven't personally read the FSM there on that.

On Renix there is only one, mounted in the exhaust manifold.
