Default Run without AC

I got a 97 that the AC compressor pulley bearings seized on. Obviously I can't run the Jeep like this, and I need to be running by Christmas. I really don't have the cash for a re-man compressor, and I don't want to just vent the R-134 as I want to get it working this spring. I can't find just the pulley to replace it with like is described in the FSM either. Getting the bypass pulley would mean removing the compressor. and like i said venting the refrigerant. Also found out there was no option for a 97 without AC either. The parts store found that on a 95 you can get one with out AC. Issue is I see that the belt with AC is 2 inches longer than the 97. So first would the 95 non-ac belt work or is there anyone out there has found a belt that will work on a 97 and bypass the ac compressor?

Just a thought, remove the nut at the center of the ac clutch, remove the outer clutch plate, you should see a snap ring that holds the pulley/brg on the end of the compressor. If you can get the failed pulley off, you can possibly replace the bearing or get a parts comp from the jy.
Good luck!

If I'm going to spend 50 bucks I might as well spend another 50 and get the new compressor. I was hoping for something quick and cheap to get me through the winter. I guess just using a different belt isn't possible. Unfortunately new bearings won't be in until mid week and it needs to be fixed by Thursday.

My 95 has an alternate belt routing for no AC does the 97 not have this?

If not just replace the bearing or bearing/clutch assembly only. If you replace the compressor you have to replace freon, etc and could screw something else up at the same time. I have replaced the bearing on several of my A/C compressors and it is not a big deal (they were not xj though). Thx-Ace

A new compressor will run +/-$225. $50 sounds quick and cheap.

Same problem. I have been unable to locate any ac bypass pulley that will bolt right in. AC cluth is 200 bucks. New compressor is also 200 bucks and then some. SOOO I pulled the clutch off and removed the bearing. Found a replacement bearing and it is 38 bucks. Lot of money for a bearing but better than a new ac compressor.

Napa could not get it. I actually found it through a local parts store who ordered it from cyberland somewhere. They are out there though. Good luck.
