Still doing the same thing.. I kinda thought of a new way to put what its doing. Its almost like when you run the cheap cheap gas in a older carberated vehicle (or maybe any) and when it gets hot the gas perculates. And then cause the blub blub thing. That happened to my dads drag car but that was only when he tried to take off, not when he let out of the gas to slow down some.

Ya, my dads positive thats whats wrong. I know mine is bad because sometimes when you start it, it will rev to 2 grand and stay their for a few seconds and sometimes it will quit and drop, but other times i have to shut it off and re start it.

Did your start out doing what mine is doing? or did was it kind of like one of those spontaneous things? When i take off, its gotten to the point ill rev it first then give it gas and start lettin out of the clutch to go. As for driving around and shifting no problem..yet

mine would start up at like 2000-3000 rpms (way high) and sometimes would start just fine. But it also happened while driving. like i could disengage the clutch and it would shoot back up to 2000-3000 rpms. IF it is only doing it on start up it is your IAC

Well it has done that once or twice while driving. Sorry i was thinking about this sputtering thing, or whatever you want to call it. Its really hard to explain. I wish you or someone was like my neighbor so i could take the for a ride in it to show what its diong. I think my dad is bringing home the new idle air control valve tonight. And then we will put it on and see if it helps. Hes almost positive it will fix it because this didnt start happening until we changed mine for one we got from the jy to try to fix mine. We put my old one back in it right after we changed it and it still does it. (im sure i already said this though)

Mine did what yours is doing OP. Same symptoms. I thought IACV, MAP, Pump (tested fine), fuel filter and replaced all but the pump.
All were fine allbeit the Throttle body was a little cruddy so I cleaned it. No change.
I feared the tranny was slipping and changed flid and filter 3 times, even tested the trans mechanically by discoing teh TCS and shifting manually (AW4)
Never threw a code, but i started to notice the behavior was often related to the "position of the throttle" or slight changes I made in the pedal not happening right.
Not always as sometimes it was related to temp or a hill or load on the vehicle. So many symptoms pointing to different things!
There was a couple weeks I expected the fuel pump to die while I was driving. Even grabbed a spare jic lol.
Once the engine warmed up a bit, especially, something wasn't working right , again totally random but it seemed more and more like something major at temp, and as you put it "dying in a straight line". Thought it was over for the XJ.
LOOOOOOONG story short, go and get yourself a 25 dollar Bosch TPS and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised how many symptoms a failing/intermittent TPS can cause It's cheap, so y amight as well.
You'll need a Torx bit to remove the TPS I think it was a T30 iirc. Good luck and let us know how it turns out!
