On creating sealed rust "cells", rust converters and "black rust".

One of the problems with just painting over rust with a rust converter, and/or any other kind of sealant, is that this encourages an anaerobic rusting known as "black rust".

While this rust isn't expansive, it continues to consume the steel, and when inevitably it is exposed to oxygen again, conventional rusting will occur at an accelerated rate. Kind of like the anaerobic burning of a wood stove; if you open the door, the fire explodes and burns down the house.

While the sealed metal may "look good", it is becoming weaker, and will eventually kill the vehicle.

Bottom line: Friends don't let friends use "rust converters." There is at least one product which will chemically REMOVE rust, and when you spray it off, the rust actually leaves, and this same product leaves behind a protective coating, but that's different from sealing an active rust cell into your vehicle. (I cannot remember the name of this product off the top of my head; maybe later.)

Anaerobic is a technical word which literally means without air, with that being said, I'am pretty sure you need three things for rust to take place, metal, moisture and oxygen(maybe a bit of salt). if even one of those are gone, wouldnt that stop the rust? isnt this realy what a inhibitor does, just one brand will seal better than others. we all know a good coat of grease prevents rust. I say use it or loose it. at that price why not use a bed liner? "just one rednecks "IMO"!

You'd think that taking away the O2 would be "good enough", but like when you shut off the O2 to a really hot wood fire, it doesn't get colder, it actually gets hotter, and rust is just really slow fire.

Basically, the rust gets its O2 from other sources, internal to the metal or the paint, or whatever, but trapping rust cells isn't a terrific idea. Of course, if you only need that item to last for a limited time and want the aesthetics, cool.

On a related issue, I would also advise using anything to mechanically removes rust that generates a lot of heat, like an airtool running a wire brush. That, too, will accellerate/encourage rust formation.

to get that seal i would assume you'd have to gut the interior so both sides were covered..right?

I was going to start undercoating my Jeep this weekend with Por 15 and since you do not want to just coat rust, if there is a small bit of surface rust and you sand it off and maybe blast it with break cleaner to clean it up do you then prime it before coating with Por15? After the Por15 I was going to put some herculiner over it as well(rust really scares me and I want to have the Jeep for a loooong time). Also, in some of the hard to reach places I have a couple cans of the Duplicolor professional spray in the black can that looks like the bedliner stuff, has anyone used this?
