Rusted front shock mount options?
Rusted passenger side Shock mount. D30 axle (I believe).
I bought shocks for my Daughter's 99 (I believe 2.5" lift), and was having her spray all the bolts with Kroil until I was home this weekend to work on it. Friday she calls and says we're not working on it, the front passenger side shock mount is rusted through (I looked, the rust is on either side of where the shock mounts, the center part where it bolts is still solid. Everything nearby (spring seat, etc.) appears solid.)
What are my options?
I haven't welded since High School (many decades ago), but I have a small (110v) stick welder and a MIG welder (110v also). Would have to practice...still need to practice to repair her rocker panels (haven't had a chance to do them yet either). Is it difficult to weld to the axle shaft?
Thanks!

Why not post a picture of the rust?
Soo depending on how bad the mount is rusted out, but also the cost and availability of another used axle local to you - it would be an argument to just replace the entire front axle.
If you were to Google "jeep XJ coil spring mount" you will find a number of options for an entire new coil spring/shock mount (~$60) but also bring to question the condition of the other side? If your replacing both sides with a new bracket I'd say your already into the relative cost of a replacement axle assy.
I'd also argue swapping the front axle out could be easier than cutting the old mount off and prepping then welding in new.

Good Points, thank you.
Good points, thank you.
Car is on the East side of PA, I'm working during the week in Central PA. I'll try to get pics next time I'm home. The Driver's side seemed solid, but I'll double check before deciding. Most (not all) of the rust seems to be on the Passenger side...I recall reading somewhere that it might be because of the salty/Slush/water getting kicked up from the edges of the roadway, but it flows to the outside because of the slope of the road (so the driver's side doesn't get as much).

without pics, but if its the lower, why not try something like this pic
imo, this will be a fair bit cheaper and easier than fitting a whole D30 assembly. (Depends on state of yours, availability and state of any swap over spare)
In addition, if your repair does fail, you can go to Option B. Having said that, I am cautious with structural welding

I did mine a while back. Mine were REALLY bad:
Front Axle Housing Repair/Replace - Jeep Cherokee Forum
I looked at straight replacement but couldn't find a good unit (mostly front-end collisions).
The name-brand replacement kits are a significant upgrade to stock.
I'd be a little leery about using a 110VAC welder on 1/4" stock tho.
