Okay guys, my roof is being attacked by rust. So far I've gotten it pretty much to the metal besides a few spots I'm gonna hit tmw that paint stripper didn't handle. So I need some advice.... my plan is to get the whole roof to the metal tmw, hit all areas with 36 grit sand paper, and spray it down with prep and etch solution over night. Then if it doesn't rain Thursday I'm going to clean off the solution and use 2 coats of por 15 and then bedline the roof while it's tacky. ( I like it, some people dont..but hey that's what makes jeeps interesting)

Well besides the bedliner please let me know if this is a good plan for slowing the rust.

You need to sand or buff the rust off then you can use a sealer primer that is made for rust , you can get it in a spay can . you will need at least 2 cans then you can paint it or use the bed liner stuff . you need to get rid of the rust 1st . I did my roof that way but I painted the roof .

I didn't think you could paint over POR 15? Pretty sure it's more like a heavy oil surface coat and not really a substrate for finishing materials.

I didn't use POR 15 I used a sealer primer that is made for rust that can be painted .

Yes - and that is a better way to go. I was commenting in response to BlackXJay's commentary on using POR 15.

Well I was leaning towards por15 because it is not really just surface rust. There is pitting in a lot of areas and without sand blasting I'd have to sand through a lot of metal, which I dont want to do. I'll take a close up pic later to show the rust. Another option may be just to hit it with the por15 and leave it. Although I remember reading somewhere that if you cover por15 while tacky paint will stick through somewhat of a chemical adhesion. I'll look for the thread. In fact Im pretty sure you have to topcoat it bc it is uv sensitive and will fade.

Look into rust reformer or phosforic acid (sp ?) if you have a way to keep roof dry.

So hopefully it takes off the rust. If so I will go the primer route. Any recommendations on a good sealer primer for rust in a spray can?

Spray cans are better then nothing ,but I would use Dupont 616S self etching primer with 616S converter , not the cheep way to go, but the best way IMHO

I used Rust Oleum Rust Reformer primer sealer and I used paint stripper buffing pads that fit on a hand held grinder and buffed off the rust , it worked well and didn't take long . I think my roof was just as bad .

Thanks guys. Well I had the phosphoric acid on over night, with not great results. It seems like more surface rust built on it.


So I'm going to home Depot now to see if they have the paint eating discs and hit it with my grinder and see what happens. Because if I spray it now I'm sure that rust will be back shortly. If they have the discs I'll try and get the rust off, spray it one more time with the acid, and hopefully paint it tmw. If everything works out I'll post pics when done.

I wouldn't bedline it if you're anywhere near the rust belt. Anything gets under that bedliner it'll rust faster than you can even see it.

Okay thank you all for your responses. So I went to Home Depot and used the paint stripper disc and 24 grit with my grinder and got most of the rust off. Not all though. I hate to be that guy that asks for advice and then doesn't take it but I ended up using por15 bc I sure as hell don't ever want to do work on the roof again and being that there was still spots of rust i wasnt sure about, i just didnt want to risk it. The car is mostly rust free besides the rockers and roof and is good for a New York car but this por15 is some serious stuff. It's like a rubbery paint. And it goes on very evenly. I'll give it a month or 2 and see if anything eats through before I recommend it, but so far so good. Here's a pic

Make sure you top coat with POR top coat... It's not UV resistant by itself

Por-15 makes a tie coat primer that will allow you to paint over the por-15. You can't leave por-15 uncovered.
