Safe to run 4wd without axles in?

That is what I will do. Install the stubs and drain the diff, plug the tubes. My diff is just a stock 30 nothing special just figured itd make more sense in the long run to rebuild the one I already have than get another one from the junkyard and take a gamble.

In that case the stub shafts should be installed to keep the unit bearings from blowing apart and the diff should be drained. The axle tubes should be sealed some how to keep junk from getting into the diff. But it might just be easier to swap in a junkyard axle if there is nothing special about the one he has.

I just pressed my u joints out and run the stubs on the hub bearing. I plan on have a set of the 2wd stubs or just cutting the ears off flush to have a oh **** stubs if I ever need them.
