Safest way to break free axle nut?

Agreed. I do have the 3/8 dewalt impact. And I love it. It is perfect for most jobs. I can't remember the torque spec on it, but it is just about enough to take off lug nuts, if they are not put on too tight. It is really handy for smaller jobs like shocks, seat bolts, cross member, mounts, things like that.
I just found that lately I've been going back to my plain old socket wrenches more. So I don't find myself using either of my impacts as much as I thought I would. But when I do, it's almost always the 3/8 that I'm using.

Ive been jamming large screwdrivers in the rotor fins and caliper for over 30 years now and have NEVER broken a screwdriver or rotor removing an axle nut. Even on my crappiest GM 80s crapmobiles. Breaker bar and a long pipe. Apply penetrating oil beforehand tho. WD40 is NOT penetrating oil. Marvels, Liquid Wrench, PB Blaster etc. Shouldn't need to apply heat..
