I wouldn't rely on the Haynes Manual too much unless you're already mechanically inclined. I've found them to be wrong about some things on occasion and wrong about wiring 90% of the time. Yet I still get them with every vehicle

You can get correct wiring diagrams here.

It doesn't have a choice for your year of xj (mine either, I have a '91) but I've been using the '93 Cherokee and it's been fairly accurate as I've been working on my lighting problem (interior lights won't turn off).

This is a pretty common problem on XJs due to crappy stock wiring. There is no headlight relay so all the current to drive the headlights has to pass though the switch. I had this same problem when I upgraded my headlights from sealed beams (had the lights flickering issue). It turned out in my case that the switch and connector were still in good condition though, you're beyond that.

Anytime you upgrade the headlight on an XJ from stock, you need to upgrade the wiring to suit. In your case the solution will need to be multi-tiered:

1) you need to upgrade the headlight harness to a high-wattage one with relays for the high/low beams. This will take the load away from the switch and small stock wiring, as well as make your headlights brighter. You can make your own, or you can go the route I did (much easier) and order one from eautoworks.com.

2) you need to replace your headlight connector - either with a junkyard one or a new one.
AIRTEX Part # 1P1190 or DURALAST Part # 583

3) The switch MAY be ok. I recommend doing the above 2 items first, and if you still have issues replace the switch.

Should I still upgrade the headlight harnedd even though I got this harness with my new headlights?

yes. That harness is to drive your headlights/ballasts. You need to add a high wattage harness to replace the stock XJ one - one with relays to take the load away from the stock switch

alright thanks man!

I'll get on that hopefully before I leave for school this weekend...it'd be a shame to have redone the whole interior without seeing it at it's full go before I'm gone.

Well, I fixed the problem guys! I have no idea how but I have a real nice home-made connection from my harness to the new connector I got made of tryco weatherproof male&female disconnects...bulky but it works.

But, now I'm having the same problem as Bugsy... sweet. ha
