Default "Select Trac" question

I have Select Trac in my Cherokee. What is going on inside the transfer case when comparing " 4 hi and 4 lock"? I know 4hi is ok any time and 4lock is slippery surface only, but what is the transfer case doing? Is it acting like a 3rd differential in 4hi?

Yeah basically, in 4hi the transfer case acts as a center differential allowing each output shaft to spin at different rates while cornering for regular driving conditions. 4 lock locks both shafts together for off-roading and crawling around.
