Default Shift solenoid?

I just picked up an 87 XJ, guy says the trans only has about 800 miles on it. Apparently not shifting due to having a bad solenoid, I don't want to buy a solenoid kit and whatnot unless I'm fairly sure. Was a bit dark when I got home so I haven't checked the fluid yet and the linkage is off so I couldn't try to see what it does. But does this make any sense? I'll update about the fluid in the morning and see if I can't get the linkage on and explain the details better. In short should I assume they were replaced in the rebuild or should I just check it off the list anyways? Thanks.

Check out these links. They talk about testing trans solenoids of various years so find the right values for your year. I honestly don't know if they used the same AW4 in all cherokee's. I'm bout to dive into a shift problem myself soon, except I'm going on 330,000 miles with no problems except bad TPS's shifting problems.

I should of asked what you mean by "not shifting". If it's staying if first gear and not shifting til high revs then test the TPS voltages by back probing connections. Your Renix TPS controls shift points among other things.

Cruisers website has all you need to get that Renix going again. http://cruiser54.com/

That first link is to a thread I started, so it's good to see that being of use to others (thanks to CCKen, especially). Six years later after diagnosing and replacing my solenoids, and it still shifts perfectly.
