Shifting Issue 1st into 2nd Gear
A little history..........
I always thought that the AW4 in my 98 Sport shifted kind of funny, always shifted where and when it should, and had no issues whatsoever, but then again I never had another XJ to compare it to......I did the kickdown cable adjustment which seemed to help "firm" the shifts up a bit SO..........
A couple of months ago had a new torque converter and pump bearings put in. Had a bad grinding/whining noise from the TC. This seemed to fix it.
A couple of weeks after the repair, 1st thing in the cool mornings when the engine was cold it took forever to shift from 1st to 2nd. Once it warmed up (5 minutes or so) it exhibited fine shifting, from dead stop to highway speeds all day long. Shifting manually 1-2 into 3 then D also worked when the engine was cold. One morning it didn't shift, I pushed it a bit, it revved high and the CEL came on. Codes P0700- then P0751, shift solenoid A. OKAY!
Getting some answers anyways.
Figured I'd buy and replace all 3 solenoids while me and my mechanic were in there. New filter and gasket, and 4 quarts of Dex/Merc and it was good to go........for a few days. Now it's occasionally exhibiting the late or no shift from 1st to 2nd again, until it's warmed up.
Bad "new" solenoid?
I've read it could also be the Throttle Position Sensor,
the 2 Vehicle Speed Sensors on the AW4
or possibly the Trans Control Module
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
