Default Shifting transmission into neutral

So I've gotten into this habit of shifting my transmission into neutral when I'm stopped or going down a hill. I notice the RPM's drop so it's less stress on the engine and I burn less fuel but can I be hurting the transmission? Will something happen to it over time and make it quit? Sorry I don't know a lot about transmissions. Thanks guys.

I'm going to assume you have an automatic transmission. Either way, no you aren't hurting it.

I do that with mine while stopped. Less wear on the transmission and keeps the temps down i think. Once guage is installed I'll know.

Yes if you shift into neutral while stopped it won't heat up as fast as it would in gear

Yea thanks guys. Just wanted to make sure I was hurting anything else. I like putting it in neutral because its less stress on everything when I don't need it. And I do watch the RPM's drop so which means burning less gas
