The 'uppers' allow you to use any eyelet shock so you're not limited by this design anymore:

The lower BPE's allow more flex, but don't quote me on that

The standard bar pin design used by most manufacturers provides no lateral support of the shock absorber bushings. Excessive movement between the parts causes the bushings to distort, instead of deflecting impacts to the shock absorber as intended. As the bushings lose their integrity, annoying "thumping" or "rattling" sounds are often heard, and even felt, inside the vehicle cabin.

The greatest benefit is if you have a lifted vehicle. Many times people will get budget lift kits, or incomplete lift kits that do not have shocks. Then they wonder what shock they will get. There aren't any shock companies outside of those providing lift kits that have longer shocks that will fit the XJ. When you get the adapters, then you can get shocks up to 28" long that will cover lifts up to 8".
