Default SHOCKer!

I checked into prices on OME shocks... $83 a piece! I read they are the best riding but Im on a student budget and since I havent ridden in an OME equipped vehicle Im hesitant to spend that kind of dough. My question... What is the next best Shock for the money? my 95 is my daily driver so I know that the payback will be worth the cash. I'll be spending alot of time in my XJ. I just want to know the options before I drop almost $400 on shocks when I have shocks that will get me A to B already. In any of the threads discussing shocks there is no clear 2nd place. Thanks for the advice. capdaddy

Personally I would'nt spend $83 on shocks for a DD, I only spent $37 apiece on my Rough Country NITRO 9000's from JC Whitney.

I have Nitro 9000's, I hate them, valved terrible for just about everything, they ride pretty rough and my Jeep is bouncing all over the place offroad.

Im upgrading to Bilsteins but if you are looking for something cheaper look into Rubicon Express shocks, Im pretty sure they are rebadged Bilstein 5100's and they run ~50 a shock. They are a pretty high quality shock at only a few bucks more than the Rough Country garbage.

Depending on how much lift you have, Shocks off a 2007 jk wrangler will work with about 2"-4" inches of lift. Get the red one that came on the rubicons. They ride better than OME shocks. You can usually find them as take offs for about 30-50 dollars a set(all 4).

Thanks for the replies.

I have investigated the JK shocks, but i havent had any luck so far in my area.

If Bilsteins are rebranded then Im into it! I always buy the generic brand at the grocery store why should my XJ be any different? Is there a Cherokee forum sponsor that sells them?

Im going to keep up the search for the JK's. In the mean time I guess I'll be jarred a bit.

I have skyjacker hydros. It rides pretty much like stock. And they were 30 bucks a piece with a $30 rebate.

POS... I love your build thread! Ive been following it for a while, lurking even before I had an XJ.

I tried to enter my info on the doetesh site and found they want a measurement for a quote on shocks. Without flexing my suspension fully how do I measure the min and max for the shocks?

you dont. if you want a good measurement you take your shocks off and flex it out. get your tire as high as it can go without rubbing (where you bump stop should be) and your set. once you know your max compressed your golden.

im at 5.5ish right now and i ordered the 6.5in lift shocks from them and wish i would have went with the 7.5in lift shock because i had to put in a 1in spacer to use all of my shock. if i would have went with the 7,5 i wouldnt have had to use the spacer and gain that much more down travel.

Down travel is flex also. down travel is where its at

Feel free to coment on my build, its getting neglected fast. i have had a few home issues (some because of the jeep) so jeep isnt getting much work done. but thing those got are getting worked out so i am going to have a TON of time to work on it here in a week or 2
