"I told them that I just needed the bushing pressed out and that I had to reuse the shell, but they told me that it's impossible to remove the bushing from the shell because it's molded as a single piece from the factory."
He did tell them, apparently they told him its not possible and then pressed out the whole bushing anyways. To me it seems like they were just after the $$$ because an honest shop would just tell him to go get a propane torch and burn it out himself, or charge him a minimal fee to do it.

Reread it... He mentions telling them that he needed the outters after he returns and the outters are already damaged.
What shop in their right mind would do this work... "after" being told he needed the outters. This bushing is a design that you simply replace, not insert new rubber.

energy suspension 2.3102R control arm bushing must reuse outer shells here is pdf
http://www.energysuspension.com/asse.../pdf/17053.PDF
this is listing for a jeep cherokee FYI
shop may have misunderstood instructions but I would make them fix the problem .
it sounds like you will have to replace the bushing with stock replacements or contact energy suspension
and see if they sell bushings with outer shells on them

Just to clarify, when I first brought the control arm to the shop I only asked them to press out the bushings; in my mind the bushings are the rubber only, but this is the first time I've done major work to the suspension of a vehicle (and the first time I've worked on anything other than an import)... you live and you learn.
Anyways, thanx for the advice everyone. I'm going to check the local junk yards to see if they have any XJs. If not I'll get a control arm off of ebay. I'll just use a propane torch to burn out the old bushings.
