You can start here and read through this post. Has some good information on it.

I have a 2000 and as many know, that year XJ is notorious for cracked heads. So I wouldn't doubt it. Turns out mine was fixed by a previous owner. phew.
This is also a good thread from jeepsunlimited. It's good to see what everyone else has encountered regarding cracked heads, most importantly when it was discovered and the symptoms they had.

The best thing to do is to do more research on your end. When in doubt..google it.

Been there dude. I cracked my 2000 a couple years ago. Low oil pressure, unexplained loss of coolant. Water in my oil. If you catch it in time, its a pretty easy fix, just kind of costly. I ended up building a new engine, picked up a junk yard 94 xj engine and built that. Different head casting. If you plan to keep the jeep, I would recommend getting away from the 0331 head.

I just had mine replaced. Mine is a 99 (146k) and had a 0630 head and it had a small crack that the machine shop could detect. Strange because I noticed no performance issues, only a small coolant loss every few days. I drained the oil and allowed it to sit a while to see if the oil would separate from the coolant and it never did, however, I did notice funky yellowish-green foam on the underside of my oil cap. I assumed it was a head gasket, but the machine shop verified it as a cracked head. I was quite disappointed since I had just bought the ol gal and hadn't put 1000 miles on her yet.

Great advice above. Start doing some research; knowledge is power with this issue.....
And nice pics from Kevin above who has experienced the 0331 problem!
