I'll second the weird sound the Toyota VVT-I engines make. I have that in my 2010 Corolla and in my previous 2009 and they both make/made the strangest whirring/oscillating sound. Also strangely, they both would overflow gas when filling the tank all the way - if I fill the Corolla I have to listen closely for the filler tube starting to fill up so I don't leak gas all down the side of the car no matter what gas station I use.

The VVT/GDI 2 liter in my 2012 Focus is one of the quietest engines I've owned, but I agree that in general the high pressure pumps in the GDIs can make a lot of high-pitched ticking racket.
