Simple remote starter for the old XJ
I'd like to install remote start on my '96 XJ so I thought I'd write the boards first to get some opinions.
First, quality is important but being inexpensive follows close behind, so a simple start system will do. I'm not looking to hook up anything else like door locks or rear hatch or whatever.
Because of the truck's age the remote start might need a tach wire but I'm not entirely sure.
Any suggestions for a decent remote starter that'll work with my XJ?
Thanks.

Sorry yes a wireless remote start.
And why...because I'm pressed for time in the mornings and I'd like to let it warm up some in this cold weather.

Personally, I love the remote start on my 2014 KL (yeah, I know this is the XJ forum). When it's single digits out, having the Jeep pre-warmed, the windshield thawed, and the seat and steering wheel warm is awesome.

ok, understand now. Didnt know what was meant. My 1990 is my newest car, so one of them new fangled remote starters is to me futuristic. Old school here, so to me a remote start is a push button on a long wire that can be used to crank the motor from outside if I want to crank from when I am working on the motor and dont have a helper in the cab to turn the key.
Most of my cars are pre 1970s, several form the 60s, and one from the later 50s, I got 13 freaking cars. plus I live in a warm climate so nevr occured to me that the car should be warmed up. All old. But I am old too. hahahaha
My older aircooled cars warm up very fast, the exhaust based heat exchangers bring heat into the cockpit very quick, faster than any of my water cooled cars, which take a while to get the coolant up to temp. I got heat in under a minute in my older aircooled cars, VW and porsches. I got nine aircooled, four water cooled, and one of the water cooled has no heater as it is an old aircooled car that has a water cooled Buick motor swapped into it, never bothered to add a heater on that one.
For safety, make sure no one accidently starts your car remotely. I heard of a remote start car via a key fob that was accidently started while it was parked in a garage that was connected to the house, ran during the night and killed the occupants of the house while they slept in their beds via carbon monoxide.
Safety first!
good luck.

A good remote start setup has sensors to verify it's in park, and will turn back off after 15-minutes. It gets harder if you have a manual, as not all manual transmission have a neutral switch and you have to rely on a sketchy sensor to detect the position of the stick.

I put on shoes and a coat and use my second set of keys to start and lock it. Then I go brush the teeth, put on the real clothes and such. I've done it that way for years. I've never had a garage involved with this.

Wish I could help but I’ve never had a remote start. My girlfriend’s 2013 JK has a remote start and it is NICE to get in the Jeep all warmed up on a cold morning.
Funny that I can start my 1990 without the clutch pedal depressed; typically a manual transmission car requires that before starting, but I guess not that year.
Please let us know if you end up putting one in. It would be great to be able to remote start the XJ on frigid mornings!

I've seen a video where someone put a Compustar remote start on a 97 Cherokee so that's probably what I'll end up going with. They didn't install anything but the start function, which is what I'm planning on, so I'm guessing it'll work out on mine as well.

A Compustar is the only one I've ever installed and I did it just the same. It worked.

Do you happen to know what model Compustar you installed EuroBabe? I'm just now getting around to ordering it.
