slow to start

Default slow to start

Howdy. Today I replaced spark plugs and fuel injectors. I reset the pcm adaptive memory and started it up. It came to life first try and we headed to a friends house . However, upon starting it up to head home, it took about 6 cranks. I checked, heard a hiss, and saw the ccv line grommet into the IM was cracked and stopped by the local automotive store and purchased some extra hose bits and a worm clamp. Turned the key, no hiss!, but still twice the am't of cranks as were before todays work. Got home and pulled off the fuel rail with the injectors still in. I heard an 'equalizing sizzle' noise. I turned the power on to check for fuel leaks.. none. So, what could be causing the multiple cranks?

Something worse after work done= revise the work done.

(I'm not entirely familiar with the double coil setup in your 01, however
check connections, leads snug, ground knocked loose, etc

Also:
Did you check the spark plug gaps before installing?
What injectors did you use and what's your fuel pressure on the rail?

Absolutely.

I had checked the terminals: snug. I did not check the gap prior to install and now that you mention it, that I bet that is what it is!

oh what a fool to assume... time to take them out, and I might as well take them all out just to make sure.

It's unreliable, the gap from factory. And since the margin for error is small, little difference can give a significant result. Let us know how this goes.

I checked cyl 1 and it was fine, then my lady was hungry, and as she is still nursing the boy, I'm trully attempting to keep her well-nourished, so I put the coil pack back on and headed out. Now, it did start up first go and again this morning. I'd torqued everything to to factory spec before and after checking. Here's to crossing fingers. xx

Sounds promising.
Otherwise, if the longer cranking times return, try to check the others in between feeds and let know how this goes and we'll take it from there (also to see if fuel delivery is an issue.

Alright Roler, this one's for you

When to the l.a.s. so that they could test the battery bc it did in fact show back up. Test came back "bad battery''. Replaced/upgraded battery and went ahead and rented the fuel pressure test kit...

Don't have to do it for me, but cheers.
Since you rented the kit, you might as well make use of it. Pressure on the rail, leak down tests, do it all, make use of it now you have it! Gives you a nice benchmark too, for future reference.

highlights of car trouble: gain of knowledge.
Someone forgot to put the schrader adapter back into the kit which renders it useless. This will be postponed until Tuesday as I'll be workinig from dark to dark tomorrow. Good night, cherokee family.

Had time today, picked up the piece, tested fuel pressure: dead stop at 49 psi. Going on 25 minutes and it's only dropped 10 psi.

After two hours it dropped down to about 5psi. I decided to check the o-rings on the injectors considering there might be a very slow leak and got to the part of pulling the f.r. out before realizing I hadn't yet removed the fuel line and left the disconnect tool at home (wife and I are visiting some friends, but the wives are cooking). So, a few broken plastic tabs later and I'm still left with a slow to start yet perfect while in operation cherokee! Whoop!

Someone else will correct me if I am wrong, but based on your last two posts, I would call that a very fast leak. In the FWIW department, my '93 holds full pressure for several days. Not saying that mine is typical.

Pelican, thank you for the heads up. I was having trouble finding information for the appropriate rate of decrease and the minimum amount of psi that should always be maintained after cool-down. Thursday I will examine/replace the o-rings. I was told to consider the cps, however I was under the impression that this causes erratic combustion and stalling (plus cel, which is not present).

occasionally this can be traced back to the fuel pump check valve that holds pressure in the system. try doing the poor mans prime to start the car, Turn key on wait 3 - 5 seconds, turn key off, turn key and start. should fire like new. it's also possible that resetting the adaptions may have affected this some way, possibly the timing or something along those lines.
