Detonation. I don't hear anything that would make me think of a rod knocking, and it stopped as soon as I replaced the plug when I first got it home.
The only thing that I hear that might be of concern is a tick that could be a con rod bearing wearing out, but that is the least likely cause of the tick in my opinion. I am 99% sure it's just the exhaust valves closing and since my manifold is cracked in 2 or 3 places I can hear it when I accelerate hard.

Does anyone know how much of a compressor I would need to replace the valve seals and possibly guides without pulling the head off?

Try the rope trick
You could do the rope trick (used to replace seals and springs in the field). Get 6 feet or 3/8" braided nylon rope. Remove all of the spark plugs (to eliminate engine compression). Turn the engine by hand until the cylinder of interest is at the bottom of the compression stroke (both valves closed. Feed the rope in the spark plug hole. Stop before you reach the end (tie a knot at the tail end). GENTLY turn the engine over BY HAND until you detect increased resistance. The rope should be supporting the valve from below. If try to compress the spring and the valve moves, turn the engine some more. Up to this point the engine should be turned in the running direction.
Replace valve components
Turn the engine backwards until you can remove the rope.
Hope this helps!

That's interesting! I think I will try that method today. Thanks for the tip!

I was able to get the valve cover pulled today. What a mess. Gunk between the valves going almost to the top of the pushrods, especially around #5, #6 and #1. I expected it to be a bit dirty due to the mileage but this is ridiculous. I had even run seafoam through the crankcase, into the vacuum lines and through the tank and it is still disgusting.
I don't get why people don't take better care of their vehicles.

Tell me about it. I am helping out my stepson with his 2000 Cherokee (see post on Automatic transmission ... wont move when warm). I am suprised that he can put fuel in it without help. I go to check it out and it is 3 quarts low on ATF, the oil has not been changed since I did it over a year ago, the radiator was over a gallon low on coolant, and the interior looked worse than a movie theater floor on opening night. The wiper blades also have the rubber falling off of them. I am afraid that when I do get it running again, he will neglect it until it dies.
Scrape out what gunk you can and change the oil again in the near future.

when i got my cherokee it had a leaking valve cover gasket. so i bought a new one to replace it, pulled the old one off and im guessing the previous owner thought it would be a grand idea to use expanding foam as a gasket it was expanded around my rockers, push rods and springs. now that was a mess!!!
