Smoking bad
After driving today my xj was smoking fairly badly from under the hood however it's not running hot and the oil pressures fine I think there's a small leak in the valve cover gasket any suggestions???

Studies have shown that more vehicle diagnosing is done close to the vehicle with eyes and light, not with a keyboard and a monitor.
Try this, and no, it's not coming out on video anytime soon.
I'd be looking up ABOVE first, and VERIFYING the source of the oil leak YOURSELF.
Everybody, who doesn't own or have to pay for or perform your vehicle repairs, loves to poke their noggin UNDER the Jeep and come out bearing the false bad news that your RMS is leaking.
Many mechanics, friends, and good old Uncle Bob seem to enjoy telling you it’s the rear main seal. Has a catastrophic ring to it, doesn’t it?
A simple leak at the back of the valve cover or other source could produce the same symptoms. You don’t need to be a mechanic to figure this out. If you have good eyesight and a dim flashlight, you’re good to go on your own. Don't jump on the RMS/oil pan gasket bandwagon right off the bat.
Almost any oil leak on your 4.0 is gonna drip from the RMS area for two simple reasons.
First off, the engine sits nose-up and any oil will run back to the RMS area. Secondly, the RMS area is also the lowest point on the engine. Simple physics and the old plumber's adage apply here. "$hit flows downhill".
Valve cover gasket, oil pressure sending unit, oil filter adapter seals and distributor gasket, in that order, have to be eliminated as possibilities first.

Then fix it. But don't rule out the other things.
And, as stated, the RMS can APPEAR to leak to the untrained, and even trained eye.
Your leak could be ALL valve cover and no RMS at all..

The gap between the trans and metal plate are fine. I can tell you right now that you've got something else going on as a leak than the RMS. Read what I posted very carefully.

Ok awesome that's good to know thanks for the help and it's defiantly a valve cover gasket leak I can see where it's leaking out at time to go get a gasket and some copper silicone I truly appreciate your help and knowledge far more helpful then "verify leak then fix it"!!!

Ok awesome that's good to know thanks for the help and it's defiantly a valve cover gasket leak I can see where it's leaking out at time to go get a gasket and some copper silicone I truly appreciate your help and knowledge far more helpful then "verify leak then fix it"!!!

I was told steer clear of rtv on this one and opt for the copper silicone and no way in hell I'm putting the cork gasket though 39.99 does seem kinda steep for the gasket but if it fixes the problem it's worth every penny!!!
