Last year I put some cheap Goodyear Wrangler Radials (235/75r15) on my XJ. This last winter we had more snow than we have seen in over a decade.. twice it snowed 12"+. This of course is probably nothing to you... however my tires did quite well. So far they have also done well in mud as I also live in the country on dirt roads..
At the time of the pictures below I only had the Goodyears on the back.

Since it sounds like your rig is stock I would go with stock size of 225/75-15, or, if you want a tiny bit extra tire a 235/75-15's.
I would definatley not go with a 10.5" wide (or wider) tire for your intended use.
The Firestone shown above looks awesome, and the Bridgestone Blizzaks as well as the Michelin X-ice tires are proven performers as well.
Studs do near nothing in snow, but on ice work well.
As with any dedicated snow tire, you will want to get them on late, and off early as warm pavement will eat them like cheese through a Cuisinart.
This means having 2 sets of tires on hand, and, ideally dedicated wheel sets are the way to go.
Don't forget to throw some sand bags or a few bundles of asphalt roofing singles in the back for weight and/or traction aids once laid in the snow/ice.

Back in the day my Dad had a hell of a set of chains, big V spikes on them. Passed many people on the side of the road on the way to the ski area that had the "new" chains... that we cable wrapped in a plastic sleeve. Never understood how they thought that was supposed to get traction.
I am not saying they are the greatest winter tire by any means, but for the price they have done well...
