There are crappy mechanics out there just as there are turds in every profession. However they get found out and generally never do as well as the guys and gals that treat every car as there own and who have the passion for fixing things.

lol, I actually stopped following the thread after it took a turn for the worst, but I did in fact do the service. The front was easy as pie, no leaks. The rear, well, I couldnt get the cover off... So ill take another shot at that on Sunday

If it's the stuck cover, a will do ya good! A rubber mallet is a good thing, too.
Of course, craftsmen use a gentle application of C-4 or det cord.

Bolts? Or was the cover stuck?
If it's the stuck cover, a flat pry bar will do ya good! A rubber mallet is a good thing, too.

Not at all! if anything, I would say its more engaging that changing oil, but its just as easy. I kind of liked doing it actually lol. I'm glad the RTV worked, although i wasn't sure whether to let it set, then torque it, or torque it immediately... or if the torque even really mattered...
Am i supposed to notice a difference in the driving with fresh fluid in there, or is it just the peace of mind, knowing your gears are healthy?

Well, back to helping the OP (if anyone is still interested)....
That video is good, but do the gasket cleanup BEFORE you spray things out with brake cleaner. That way the old grease catches any dust you make, and it gets cleaned out one time with the brake cleaner.
And, yes, RTV will work just fine. It's easy to use. 'Nuff said.

You can use RTV, high tack, Indian Head, Gasgcinch, dried goat's blood, or whatever you like on a paper gasket.
A lot of manufacturers have switched to RTV for a number of reasons. Paper gaskets have a higher TCO and aren't as versatile. For a DIYer that will probably score the sealing surface, have a deformed diff cover (stamped steel bends easily), or possibly need to do more than one gasket, RTV is cheap and easy for a DIYer.
This thread is to give a guy a hand on servicing his diff for the first time (who, by the way, doesn't know how to properly prep and install a paper gasket), not a pissing contest.

Depends lol. Some want you to let it set, some skin, some assemble but wait, and some just everything inmediately. Read the tube lol
